While we can’t make healthcare professionals into mind-readers, we can become better at communicating our needs and concerns to them. The more serious our medical condition is, the more critical this dialogue becomes in planning our care. We at the Center for Communication in Medicine have made it our mission to bridge communication between patients, families and healthcare providers. In this workshop we’ll introduce a video and workbook developed to empower patients to begin the conversations essential to shared healthcare decision-making.

“You’ve got to communicate what you want to do.”

What’s cooking in YOUR kitchen this spring? (Guest author: Shoshana Belisle)

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Share your favorite spring recipes for our Community Wellness Cookbook

Now that spring has sprung, it’s possible that you’ve noticed a change in your eating preferences.  Perhaps you have less of an appetite overall, or perhaps you crave foods that are lighter and cleaner.  This is natural and healthy this time of year as your body conducts its own internal “spring cleaning.”  I know that in our family the blender has once again taken center stage as I’ve started concocting delicious, light and refreshing smoothies.

We would like to know what’s cooking in YOUR kitchen this spring!

The Norman Williams Public Library and the Ottauquechee Health Foundation are partnering to create a Community Wellness Cookbook to connect, nourish and serve the Woodstock and surrounding communities.

We invite your participation through the submission of original recipes that fit the following health-promoting criteria:

  • Focus on whole foods (i.e. fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains) rather than refined foods (i.e. white sugar, white flour, etc.)
  • Emphasize plant foods, although some animal products are acceptable
  • Celebrate seasonal and local produce!

In your submission, please include ingredients with amounts, instructions for preparation as well as any interesting narrative or thoughts about your creation.  You can either fill out a recipe submission form, which is available at the Library’s circulation desk, or you can email me at the address listed below.  Please submit your recipes by May 15, and in exchange, I will email you three of my own spring recipes for you to enjoy.

The submission form is in the blog post below this – I look forward to seeing your recipes!

Alternatively, visit the link below to print out the submission form:

Thank you for taking part in this project!

Greetings from the new staff of OHF!

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

Alexandra Spalding (L) and Sherry Thornburg (R)

Dear Friends of the Ottauquechee Health Foundation:

I am very honored and excited to serve as the new Executive Director of the Foundation.  I began my work with OHF on February 1, 2012, replacing Deborah Heimann, who served as Interim Director since Tom Roberts left the position in June of 2011.

My background includes 28 years of experience as a health administrator, research coordinator, and educator.

Locally, and most recently, I worked to coordinate a variety of research projects at the Center for Informed Choice of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. I also serve as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset, Maine.

I am a May 2010 graduate of the Leadership Upper Valley Institute and hold a Masters in Public Health (MPH) from the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of New South Wales, Australia.

To date, I have met community members and organization from Hartland, Barnard, and Woodstock as well as community health partners from an impressive array of local organizations.  I am looking forward to meeting and working with all of our communities and encourage you to give me a call or stop by our office.

Sherry Thornburg
Executive Director

Alexandra Spalding—I began my role as Administrative Assistant and Good Neighbor Grants Coordinator in May, 2012.  My background in the private sector includes 25+ years marketing research, project management, and healthcare industry consulting.  I moved to Woodstock in 2000 from the greater Boston area where I received a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Boston University. When I am not working I enjoy many outdoor sports including skiing, tennis and hiking on Mt. Tom.

Vermont is a great place to get involved with healthcare initiatives. Many groups and individuals are oriented to wellness and improving the health of Vermonters. I have always been interested in health and wellness, so working in my new role as the Good Neighbor Grants Coordinator at the Foundation is a perfect fit.

Alex Spalding
Administrative Assistant

If you are in the neighborhood, please stop by to say hello and meet Sherry and Alex.   Also, if you have any questions, know of a group organization that might be interested in learning more about the great works of The Ottauquechee Health Foundation, give Sherry or Alex a call at 802-457-4188.

New Yorker Article: “Letting Go”

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

At our board meeting last week, I passed out copies of an article by Dr. Atul Gawande from The New Yorker, “Letting Go: What should medicine do when it can’t save your life?”  Board members who had read the article suggested we post a link to it on our blog.  Here it is.  Let us know what you think of the article.

We’ve discussed having a forum in our community where we talk about the types of issues raised in this article.  Would you be interested in attending such a forum?  Let us know.

Thanks,

Tom Roberts
